The Power of Your Character in an Interview

Typically, the main thing that people point to in being successful in getting that fulfilling career or dream job is your experience.  Whether it is how long you have worked for, where you have worked in the past, which institution you have studied at, or what accolades you have won,  so much of what is considered is of the candidate's history.

This is true, but not entirely the whole truth.  Its value appears in the requirements and preferences listed for each position.  Employers identify the essential skills an individual needs to have in order to understand and perform the duties.  These qualities are then highlighted with confidence in a candidate's resume and further emphasized and discussed in their cover letter.

A glowing resume and cover letter cannot be undermined.  It certainly demonstrates both your relevant achievements and experiences, but also your competency in creating such an effective document.  However, in most cases, a winning resume and cover letter with experiences that meet all the employer’s requirements alone does not get the candidate the job.

These documents most often get you the interview, which is essentially a foot in the door, but fails to get you a seat at the table.  This is because the interview portion serves as an essential part of a selection process.

Oftentimes candidates will regard an interview as simply an oral component of regurgitating their resume and cover letter content to the interviewer.  And sometimes, it may truly seem like this is the case.  However, the true purpose of an interview is for the interviewer to gauge your character and personality.  The real question being asked in an interview, though in almost all cases not explicitly out loud,  is would you be a fit for our team?  Would you be able to work around us and like it here?  These questions are not answered by how many years you have worked in the field, though you may speak about that during the interview.

In the interview, how you speak, your body language, how you carry yourself, and your mood and mannerisms are what will be examined the most.

Some may say that in a time where being virtual has become more practiced for interviews, these things are not as essential.  However, arguably, on the contrary, it has put more pressure on the candidate to showcase their personality through a computer screen.  As even through a virtual platform, the purpose of an interview remains the same.

Thergo it is critical to be able to know how to nail an interview by knowing how to carry yourself and show off your best self.  So often the more qualified candidate will be put aside for the candidate that is just better connected during an interview.  Though experience can get you the interview, it is the interview that gets you the job.
